Complicating my life further...

Some inspiration via Kurt Vonnegut

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be.
Kurt Vonnegut

That I would say, sums it up.

The thing is, what if you can't make out whether or not you are pretending or not. Not everyone knows whether they are the real them, or not.

So am I pretending? Is it wrong to pretend?
What about "Mitoach Shello L'shma, Bah Lishmah?"

What is it ladies and gentlemen? Can we pretend? Do you pretend?

  • I think we all pretend at some point in our lives. We pretend to others and we pretend to ourselves. Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with it as long as you are aware that you are pretending. If we followed every whim and emotion that we felt, we would be very unbalanced people. We are defined by what we choose to do, not by what we think and feel.

  • And like you said- mitoch shelo lishma... in a sense, if you choose to do something or act in a certain way, you are not pretending. Once you do it, it becomes who you are.

  • i might try to pretend but really our true selves ( what ever that is) comes out. We can pretend further on these blogs and try to be who we want to be. But you cant pretend forever. People tend to fall back on their nature. when we become friends with people we can pretend for a little while to be sometyhing else but eventually you fall back to your REAL personality.

  • Think about this, are you pretending to pretend?

IMHO Most of us know what is Sheker and what is Emes, we can pretend and ignore what we feel or try to be oblivious to what we know, yet it is all pretense. (And pretense is a lie which never feels right.)

We know who we are, there is no fooling yourself.

  • this all depends on how you define pretending. I was defining it as acting in a way that you do not neccessarily feel.

  • Acting in a way you dont feel...every time I light up a cigarette I feel it being all wrong. I see the commercials, I read the statistics, I know what i may be asking to come my way, but I block that out. Isnt that acting in a way u dont necessarily feel? I PRETEND cigarettes are ok. But sometimes little life deceptions makes life worth living. For some pretending is a survival tac-tic. We all pretend.

  • So basically the census here is that we all pretend, and we rationalize it in many creative ways. And I think that there are some people that are so good at hiding who they really are that people who are close to them can be fooled their whole lives.

  • Anon- I like the cig's idea.... I understand what you mean.

Thats just it- why is life's survival dependant on pertneding? Why?

  • (original anon says:)

Well heres a concept for u, we learn in tanya, the most elementary concept of Chochma, bina, and da'as. Now lets just use my favorite example, the cigarette. Take a doctor for instance who smokes. I mean some people say, he must be INSANE. Atleast us dumb morons havent actually studied a cancerious lung, seen cancer patients being sick, read statistics, studys and everything else there is to read. But some how the bina doesnt become da'as. Is it pretending? Or are we all stopping at step number 2 and not taking step #3? So is it really pretending?
