Adoption in the Jewish World.....
My neighbor S just adopted a baby boy from Korea. They have been married about 10 years, and have tried every avenue short of surrogacy. When I first learnt of their plan to adopt, I was appalled. Not because they were adopting. I believe in adoption, I believe in people who love children taking in other people's children and loving them as their own.
I just don't believe that a Korean child should be brought up in an Orthodox Jewish household. I mean who are we fooling here. The name of the game here is "who can be more religious", right. Would you be the one to let your child play with "that Korean kid"?
Would you invite "that funny looking kid" over for dinner, let your child sleep over at his house? Let you daughter date him? Let us be realistic here, in our quest for perfection and religion we have crossed some lines that have no business being there.
There are people who have adopted children of other races and nationalities, we see them in line at the grocery store, we see them playing with them in the park. We hear about them when no one wants to let them into our precious insular Bais Yaakovs and Yeshivas. Do we as human beings have a right to bring these children into our lives and homes, knowing that they will suffer for the rest of their lives?
This morning was the bris of the little Korean child, no longer Korean in anything but the color of his skin and the slant of his eyes. When I walked into the room for a moment I couldn't breathe, I could do nothing but stare at the face of the proud mommy and daddy. In that moment, I understood what it was about. These two people have gambled with their lives and the life of another as well. They have chosen to mold two worlds into one. But when I saw the joy in their faces, the tears in their eyes, I understood. There is no right, there is no wrong. There are just millions of people trying to do the best they can.

You raise a valid issue and I don't see how it is negated by good intentions. If the child came as an adult and wanted to become Jewish, we'd have no right to turn him away because he'e Korean. But to subject a kid to agony and estangement by his white "puritan" school-mates? Was a Korean adoption just cheaper?

Yes, I agree with you, which is essentially why I posted this in the first place. However, must someone’s joy and happiness be sacrificed because of something that may or not happen?
As Jews we are supposed to be above all this. I honestly don't have a real reply. I thought I was right until I saw their faces. Their lives are complete...
And no Korean was not cheaper, they are just known to be healthy babies, whereas Russian babies have a multitude of problems.

Good 'ol blond hair, blue eyes, white kids weren't available?
"Above all this" is when someone choicefully becomes Jewish, not when they're subjected to it.
I remember looking into the whole Dor Yeshurun thing. Putting human emotion aside {Kaviyachol}, I think that it's bad that two carriers should stay married. What right do people have to cause children who will suffer through life {and make the parents suffer, and even be a burden on society}? It's a sensitive and harsh issue and it may be at the expense of hapiness, but things like this have to be weighed when making decisions.
I don't mean to compare a healthy child to sick children {Bla"h}, but the point remains the same.
I guess that in the end we have to respect them and love the child, one way or the other.

Wouldn't parents who are carriers of a genetic disease refrain from having children once they realize they are carriers?
That is usually what happens.
In terms of that, I agree it is wrong.
If you want a white child you must really buy him or her. With Korean babies, though it coasts about 20 grand or so, it is not buying.
Baby buying is a big business you know.

You seem to have grasped now how heartwrenching an empty home is, how sad the chagim become, how spending time with your community becomes traumatic without children to love and raise. The "name of the game" is always ones relationship to Hashem, not making the neighbors comfortable. The mitzvah and brachas of adopting and raising a child is what will count when Yom Kippor comes, not looking or acting like everyone else. Why shouldn't parents teach their children that true Bnai Torah are known by their acts and their refinement, not by race. Furthermore, there would be no need for Dor Yisharim if we Yiddin spread the genes around more. My husband's family contains a gioret. The children of that union grew up to be exceptionally healthy and intelligent. The other side was a couple where both were descended from eastern european jewish families. Guess what? Mostly special needs. Loved and treasured by their family, they too contribute to our people. Yet would their parents have chosen for them to suffer health issues and disabilities? Being so insular as a people is not so healthy for us. Hashem has provided gerus for us as a bracha, to keep us healthy and enduring, to bring us joy. And lastly....
Buying a baby" ANY BABY, is highly illegal, and ASSUR halachically. Adoption is complicated enough, and because there are people willing to" buy babies" trafficking in human life essentially (not all people-sadly-adopt just to raise a family. There are a lot of evil people out there) the rest of us potential adoptive parents must suffer through difficult adoption procedures. Being Frum does not mean being white, it means being dedicating your life to serving Hashem with all your heart. Adoptive families, adoptive children of all races, all created in Hashem's image, are
exactly that...Faith in Hashem to start a family and build a home after you have been faced with adversity, to educate the people around you in the ways chesed. This is Kiddush Hashem of high order.
Please wish your neighbors a Mazal Tov from my family.

Your comments are perhaps well intentioned, but seem to echo the same lack of judgment (among other things) shown by people who don't accept Jews that don't look like them. There are children born Jewish who have Asian features. I am one of them. Should my parents have aborted me because some Jews are judgmental? For that matter, some Jews are fat, short, handicapped. We cannot toss aside our Torah because some Jews do not know how to behave. It is incumbent on us to show such Jews where they fall short. The behavior that they exhibit is not based on Torah. As Jews, we know that as an entire group of people we can be subject to the anti-antisemitism of others with tragic circumstances. This is also not a reason for us to set aside who we are and our Torah values. Not bringing a Jew into the world because it may face hardship has never been a valid Jewish position. If it were, many of us would not have the blessing to be able to sit here and write these posts today. There is such a thing as G-d's will. We do not know if this child is one of the Jews that was among us on Sinai. Who are any of us to thwart this child's destiny whatever it may be because of close-minded bigotry. Also, the "Jewish" look that is presumed as the norm in these postings isn't particularly Jewish. It's Eastern European. Who knows if Avraham Avinu or Moshe Rabbeinu would have given even a passing notion that they were looking at one of their own.
That said, I sense Frum but Thinking is genuinely concerned about our thinking through our actions. It is appreciated that you have provided a forum to put this out there for discussion. I don't get the sense that anyone here is trying to be mean. Everyone is agreed that we do not want children who look different to suffer. I just ask that we think through the implications of what we say.
Certainly, our good intentions can sometimes mushroom into several complicated scenarios in life. That is why in all things, it is good to consult with good halachic authorities on what is right and good and Jewish. If we do that and have our goal to do what is right by Torah, we can sleep knowing we did the right thing even if the consequences are not always what we would prefer.
